A mixproof valve separates incompatible fluids through two sealing points and a leakage chamber, allowing hygienic systems to route product and cleaning media with controlled separation. Pneumatic actuation and CIP capability make this design suitable for food, dairy, beverage, brewing, and pharmaceutical processing.
How mixproof valve operation controls fluid separation
During the closed position, upper and lower sealing elements isolate two process paths. The space between them remains separated from both product streams. If one seal loses integrity, fluid enters the leakage chamber and exits through the designated outlet instead of reaching the second line. This double-seat principle is a defining feature of hygienic mixproof systems.
A mix proof valve is often selected for automated changeover, product separation, and cleaning cycles. Its double-seat structure can reduce the number of separate valves required within a process matrix.
Aseptic routing and sanitary construction
The referenced aseptic pneumatic reversing valve uses an SS316L forged and CNC-machined body, PTFE sealing, welded or clamped connections, an inner surface roughness of Ra≤0.4 μm, and a maximum temperature of 150°C. Its specified working pressure is ≤0.8 MPa, with 1, 1.5, and 2 inch sizes. These specifications support clean process routing where controlled switching and low-residue surfaces are required.
This valve should not be classified as a conventional double-seat mixproof valve unless its configuration includes the independent seats and leakage chamber required for mixproof service.
| Selection factor | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Fluid separation | Independent sealing barriers |
| Leakage control | Drainable or detectable leakage chamber |
| Actuation | Pneumatic response and fail position |
| Wetted material | 316L and compatible seals |
| Cleaning | CIP or aseptic cleaning sequence |
| Connection | Welded or hygienic clamp standard |
Where the mixproof concept adds process value
Mixproof systems are widely used where separate media must pass through the same piping network without direct contact. Proper selection depends on flow rate, pressure, temperature, fluid properties, seat design, seal material, surface finish, and cleaning conditions.
Mixproof valve selection in practice
A suitable valve should match the actual piping matrix rather than line size alone. The leakage chamber, seat configuration, pneumatic actuator, seals, surface finish, and CIP sequence should be evaluated together before specification.
