A sanitary ball valve in three-way food and beverage lines prevents CIP dead legs when three conditions align: full-bore ports match pipe inner diameter, a cavity-filled seat leaves no void behind the ball, and the valve drains through gravity. Confirm all three before installation; skip one, and cleaning fluid bypasses the cavity behind the ball, leaving residue that routine flushing cannot remove.

Full-Bore Geometry Removes Velocity Drops

Each flow path in a three-way body must match the adjoining pipe ID. One undersized port slows cleaning solution below the shear threshold. A sanitary valve with equal bore at every port keeps wall shear uniform. Four checks confirm the geometry:

  1. Measure bore at each port with a bore gauge.

  2. Compare readings against pipe schedule ID.

  3. Confirm no step at port-to-pipe transition.

Cavity-Filled Seat Eliminates the Dead Leg
