A sanitary diaphragm valve provides hygienic shutoff and flow control through a flexible diaphragm that moves against a weir or seat. The diaphragm separates the process medium from the upper actuator area, reducing the need for a conventional stem packing path. In a pneumatic configuration, compressed air moves the actuator, while a positioner can manage valve positioning for controlled process operation. The referenced design uses SS316L, a clamped connection, and an EPDM plus PTFE sealing arrangement for hygienic processing.
How the diaphragm controls the process path
During normal operation, the diaphragm remains closed against the lower valve body until the pneumatic actuator receives an opening signal. The diaphragm then lifts from the weir and creates the flow passage. When the closing signal is applied, the actuator returns the diaphragm toward the seat to isolate the line.
This construction is one reason hygienic diaphragm valves are widely selected where cleanability, drainability, and reduced product retention matter. The lower process chamber can remain separated from the actuator mechanism, reducing exposure of upper components to the process fluid.
SS316L body and EPDM PTFE sealing
A stainless steel sanitary diaphragm valve requires both body material and diaphragm material to match the process. The product uses SS316L for the valve body, while the listed sealing configuration combines EPDM and PTFE. The PTFE contact layer provides broad chemical resistance, while the elastomer supports sealing flexibility.
The specified operating range is -20°C to +120°C with a working pressure of 0–10 bar. Available sizes cover 1–4 in and DN25–DN100, with clamped connections and 3A, DIN, SMS, RJT, ISO, and IDF standards listed for selection.
| Selection factor | Verification point | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Process medium | Chemical and viscosity characteristics | Protects diaphragm integrity |
| Cleaning cycle | CIP temperature and cleaning chemistry | Supports seal compatibility |
| Control method | On/off or modulating operation | Determines actuator and positioner needs |
| Pipe layout | Drainage and orientation | Reduces retained liquid |
| Maintenance | Diaphragm access and replacement interval | Affects service efficiency |
Where a point of use valve fits
A point of use valve can control fluid at a branch or terminal distribution point where clean isolation and controlled delivery are required. In high-purity systems, POU diaphragm designs are also associated with purified-water distribution and sterile process lines.
For automated sanitary processing, a sanitary diaphragm valve should be specified around the actual medium, pressure, temperature, cleaning cycle, connection standard, diaphragm material, actuator mode, and required positioning function. That approach gives the valve a defined operating purpose rather than relying on nominal size alone.
