A sanitary filter in a hygienic process line removes unwanted particles before they reach pumps, valves, filling equipment, or product-contact components. A clamped straight configuration uses a stainless steel housing with an internal screen, creating a direct flow path that supports inspection and cleaning. The referenced design is available in SS304 or SS316L, uses forged construction and clamp connection, and supports metal mesh, perforated plate, or wedge wire elements with mesh ratings from 30 to 165.
Why Straight Flow Changes Filtration Behavior
A straight strainer keeps the inlet and outlet on the same axis, reducing unnecessary flow-direction changes. The screen intercepts particles larger than its openings while liquid continues downstream. Differential pressure is an important operating signal: as retained solids build on the screen, flow resistance can rise. Monitoring pressure loss shows when the element needs inspection or cleaning.
Screen selection should follow particle size, solids loading, viscosity, flow rate, and acceptable pressure drop. A finer screen can retain smaller particles, but it can also load faster. The sanitary filter therefore needs to be sized around actual process duty rather than nominal pipe size alone.
| Selection point | Process consideration |

| Mesh rating | 30–165 based on particle retention needs |
| Construction | Forged stainless steel housing |
| Connection | Clamp connection for sanitary piping |
| Useful surface | 15%–52.6% |
Sanitary Filter Choices Beyond a Straight Screen
A sanitary strainer is suited to reusable screen filtration where captured solids are inspected and removed. A sanitary basket strainer uses a removable basket element and can provide a larger collection chamber for heavier particulate loading. A sanitary bag filter housing uses a replaceable bag inside a vessel, giving a different capacity and maintenance approach. These configurations should not be treated as interchangeable simply because all are used in sanitary filtration systems.
Cleaning, Inspection and Line Integration
CIP procedures should account for the filter housing, screen, gasket, and connection surfaces. Clamp access should allow the internal element to be removed without unnecessary pipework disturbance. Before commissioning, the unit should be checked for correct flow direction, compatible gasket material, secure clamp engagement, adequate service clearance, and acceptable pressure loss at operating flow.
Hygienic Processing Requirements
For food, beverage, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical lines, hygienic design depends on material compatibility, cleanable surfaces, sealing integrity, and practical maintenance access. A sanitary filter selected around these conditions can provide dependable particle control while protecting downstream equipment and keeping the process line serviceable.
