A sanitary tank bottom valve is installed at the lowest point of a process vessel to control liquid discharge and reduce retained product. A tank bottom diaphragm valve suits hygienic processing because its diaphragm separates the process fluid from the operating mechanism and limits exposed internal parts. The outlet position, sealing method, connection type, and tank geometry also affect drainability, cleaning, and dead-leg control.
How a Bottom Valve Supports Tank Drainage
The tank outlet should follow the vessel bottom contour to reduce liquid pockets and support complete drainage. SS304 or SS316L stainless steel is used for sanitary wetted surfaces, while smooth internal passages can reduce product retention during discharge and cleaning. Tri-clamp, threaded, and welded connections can match different piping layouts while maintaining a practical process flow path.
Why Diaphragm Sealing Matters
A tank bottom diaphragm valve uses a flexible diaphragm to control the process opening. The diaphragm separates the process side from the operating area, reducing the number of exposed internal components. PTFE sealing and an NBR O-ring can be used according to process conditions. The configuration supports a maximum pressure of 10 bar and a maximum temperature of 120°C.
Combining Level Monitoring With Sampling
A liquid level gauge provides visual observation of fluid height, while a sampling valve creates a dedicated point for sample withdrawal. The clamped design can use 1/4–1/2 inch connections with manual operation. Two gauges can also be positioned at different heights when the vessel requires more than one level reference.
This arrangement separates drainage, level monitoring, and sampling into defined vessel functions. Such separation can simplify routine inspection while reducing the need to use the main outlet connection for tasks that require a separate access point.
| Function | Design consideration | Process purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Tank drainage | Lowest-point outlet | Reduces retained liquid |
| Shutoff | Diaphragm sealing | Controls liquid flow |
| Level monitoring | Liquid level gauge | Provides visual inspection |
| Sampling | Sampling valve | Enables sample collection |
Installation Points That Affect Performance
- Match the outlet position with the tank bottom contour.
- Check wetted materials and seals against process conditions.
- Match the connection with the sanitary piping layout.
- Keep internal dead-leg volume low.
A sanitary tank bottom valve performs as part of the complete vessel arrangement rather than as an isolated component. Drainage geometry, diaphragm sealing, level visibility, and sampling access should be considered together so the sanitary process path remains practical during production, cleaning, and inspection.
