A sanitary pressure relief valve protects hygienic process equipment from excessive pressure when system pressure reaches a preset level. The manual aseptic configuration suits sanitary piping, tanks, and process equipment where controlled pressure protection, cleanable construction, and process compatibility are required.
Spring Loaded Relief From a Defined Set Point
Under normal operation, the valve remains closed while spring force maintains the seal. Pressure is adjusted through the spring compression nut. When inlet pressure reaches the selected set point, the valve opens and releases the process medium until pressure returns to an acceptable level.
The set pressure should match the permitted pressure of the protected equipment. Relief capacity, process pressure, and discharge conditions should also be evaluated before selection.
SS304 SS316L Surfaces and Hygienic Sealing
The valve is available in SS304 or SS316L stainless steel with a clamped connection. The specified pressure control range is 0.5 to 6 bar, with medium temperatures from −10°C to 120°C. It can handle liquid or gas media and uses food-grade rubber sealing. DIN, 3A, SMS, and ISO connection standards are available, with a surface finish of Ra 0.8 μm.
These specifications should be checked against the process medium, temperature, pressure, and sanitation cycle. Seal compatibility becomes especially relevant where repeated cleaning is required.
| Selection consideration | Practical check |
|---|---|
| Set pressure | Match the permitted pressure of the protected equipment |
| Relief capacity | Confirm suitable discharge for the process condition |
| Process medium | Check material and seal compatibility |
| Installation position | Consider drainage and service access |
| Cleaning cycle | Confirm compatibility with the sanitation procedure |
Manual Adjustment at the Process Connection
A manual hygienic pressure relief valve allows pressure adjustment directly at the installed valve. This arrangement suits process points where local access is available and a pneumatic actuator is not required.
The clamped construction can also make disassembly more convenient during inspection and maintenance. Proper gasket installation and connection alignment remain necessary for reliable sealing.
CIP Path and Residue Control Around the Outlet
CIP compatibility should be considered together with wetted surfaces, dead leg control, and drainage. A suitable internal flow path can reduce retained material around the relief outlet and support routine sanitation.
The cleaning method, seal material, process temperature, and installation orientation should therefore be evaluated as one system rather than separately.
Pressure Protection Versus Vacuum and Air Release
A sanitary vacuum relief valve addresses negative pressure inside tanks or process equipment, while a sanitary air release valve removes trapped air or gas. These functions are different from overpressure protection and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Matching Relief Protection to the Process
The valve suits food, beverage, dairy, cosmetic, and other hygienic process systems where pressure protection must coexist with cleanable equipment. Set pressure, relief capacity, material compatibility, connection selection, and cleaning requirements should all be checked before installation.
