A stainless steel manway for an atmospheric tank provides a closable opening for inspection, cleaning, and routine access. A square, non-pressure cover suits tanks requiring a rectangular access area, provided the vessel remains within the cover’s rated operating conditions. Opening dimensions, sealing requirements, and operating conditions should be confirmed before selection.
SS304 or SS316L at the Welded Tank Opening
The square cover supports SS304 or SS316L stainless steel with a welded connection. SS304 suits many general sanitary applications, while SS316L may offer better corrosion resistance in environments involving chlorides or certain aggressive cleaning agents. Selection depends on the process medium, cleaning chemicals, and fabrication requirements.
EPDM, Silicone, NBR, and FKM Under Cleaning Conditions
A stainless manway relies on its gasket to maintain a consistent seal against the tank frame. Available options include EPDM, silicone, NBR, and FKM. Each elastomer requires compatibility checks against process fluids, cleaning solutions, and operating temperatures to reduce the risk of swelling, hardening, or leakage.
The specified EPDM temperature range is −10°C to +120°C. The allowable operating range of the complete assembly must also account for the cover structure, gasket configuration, and actual service conditions.
What Ra ≤ 0.8 μm Means at the Gasket Seat
For sanitary tank manways, surface roughness affects cleanability and the potential for residue retention. A finish of Ra ≤ 0.8 μm provides a defined surface-finish reference, but overall hygiene also depends on weld finishing, gasket seating, drainage, and clean-in-place (CIP) coverage. These areas should be assessed as part of the installed tank assembly.
Four Fit Checks for a Square Tank Opening
| Selection factor | Required verification | Effect on installation |
|---|---|---|
| Tank operating conditions | Pressure, vacuum, and process transients | Confirms suitability for the service |
| Opening geometry | Clear dimensions, frame depth, and weld interface | Determines access and mounting fit |
| Gasket compatibility | Media, cleaning chemicals, and temperature | Affects sealing reliability |
| Cleaning access | Gasket seat, weld finish, and surrounding clearance | Influences inspection and sanitation |
Keep the Cover Within Atmospheric Service Limits
Stainless steel manway lids should match the actual tank opening rather than nominal cover dimensions alone. Opening clearance, access direction, gasket replacement space, and surrounding equipment should all be checked before ordering.
A non-pressure cover must not replace a pressure-rated manway. Tanks subject to internal pressure, vacuum, or pressure fluctuations require a cover specifically rated for those conditions.
