A sanitary pressure relief valve protects hygienic piping, tanks, and process equipment from pressure conditions that exceed the selected limit. A relief valve opens at its set pressure to discharge excess pressure, while a manual flow-control valve regulates flow or downstream pressure during normal operation. That distinction matters in food, dairy, beverage, pharmaceutical, and other clean-process systems.
Relief protection starts with the pressure function
A pressure-relief design is normally closed during routine operation and opens when inlet pressure reaches its set point. A tri clamp pressure relief valve adds a hygienic clamp connection that can simplify line assembly and cleaning. A sanitary vacuum relief valve serves a different function: it admits air when tank pressure falls below the allowable vacuum level to reduce the risk of tank deformation during draining or cooling.
A sanitary pressure regulator valve is also different from a relief device. A regulator controls process pressure continuously, while a relief valve responds to an overpressure event. Using one in place of the other can leave the system without the intended protection.
Materials and connection details that affect selection
For sanitary flow control, 304 or 316L stainless steel provides the valve body options, with EPDM, silicone, Viton, or PTFE available as sealing materials. Clamped or welded connections are offered, with DIN, 3A, SMS, ISO, and IDF standards listed. The specified working range reaches 10 bar and -10°C to +120°C. These factors should be matched with the process medium, temperature, cleaning cycle, and required pressure range.
| Selection factor | Practical check |
|---|---|
| Pressure function | Relief, vacuum protection, or continuous regulation |
| Valve material | 304 or 316L stainless steel |
| Seal material | EPDM, silicone, Viton, or PTFE |
| Connection | Clamp or weld; confirm applicable standard |
| Cleaning | Check CIP requirements and cleanability |
| Process conditions | Confirm pressure, temperature, medium, and flow |
Why cleanability matters in pressure-control systems
A sanitary valve needs more than pressure control. Wetted materials, elastomer compatibility, smooth internal geometry, and connection design influence cleanability and contamination risk. In CIP service, the valve and adjacent piping should be assessed as one flow path rather than as isolated components.
For process lines requiring both regulation and overpressure protection, a manual flow-control valve can manage normal operating conditions while a dedicated relief device provides protective discharge. This separation of functions creates a clearer pressure-control strategy and makes valve selection easier to verify against the actual process duty.
Pressure Relief Valve Selection for Hygienic Systems
A sanitary pressure relief valve is selected according to set pressure, flow capacity, process temperature, medium, materials, connection type, and cleaning requirements. A flow-control valve should not be treated as a substitute for a dedicated relief device unless its design and certification specifically support that duty.
