A sanitary check valve allows liquid to flow in one direction and closes when reverse pressure acts against the valve closure element. In hygienic process lines, this automatic action limits backflow that can affect pump priming, product routing, and pressure stability. Selection depends on opening pressure, connection design, seal compatibility, and the operating limits of the complete assembly.

How Spring Loading Determines Forward Flow

A sanitary spring check valve opens when the inlet pressure overcomes the spring force and opposing pressure at the valve seat. When the forward pressure falls, the spring moves the closure element toward its seat to restrict reverse flow. The opening pressure therefore affects pump selection, flow conditions, and the pressure available for downstream equipment.

The published technical table lists opening-pressure values of 0.3 bar for DN25, 0.2 bar for DN32 and DN40, and 0.1 bar for DN50–DN100. These figures should not be treated as the maximum working pressure; the allowable line pressure must be confirmed separately.

Matching Materials and Connections to the Process

Selection Factor What to Verify
Body alloy Confirm SS304 or SS316L compatibility with the process medium.
Seal material Check EPDM, silicone, Viton, or NBR resistance to the fluid and cleaning agents.
Internal finish Confirm the required surface roughness for the hygienic process.
End connection Match the valve ends to the actual pipework and maintenance plan.
Operating limits Verify pressure, temperature, and installation orientation for the chosen model.

A clamped check valve allows easier removal at a compatible clamp joint, while welded connections create permanent pipeline joints. The specified end configuration should match the installation drawing before purchase.

Limiting Backflow in Hygienic Pipework

A sanitary non return valve should close reliably when reverse flow begins, but its performance depends on the spring, seat, pressure differential, and installation conditions. Incorrect sizing or a mismatch between opening pressure and pump performance can restrict flow or prevent the system from operating as intended.

Routine checks should cover seat wear, seal condition, internal cleanliness, and connection integrity. Before installation, the model drawing and technical documents should confirm the actual connection, nominal size, opening pressure, and maximum working pressure.
